Aluminium and PVC rainwater pipes

Rainwater pipes and guttering can be made out of cast iron, steel, aluminium or PVC.

Each of these materials have different properties.

Cast iron is heavy and rusts if it is not painted and maintained.
They are expensive and generally found on older buildings.

Cast iron guttering

Cast iron gutters are mainly seen on old buildings.

PVC gutters

PVC is now used for most gutters and pipes.

Aluminium is light and does not corrode. It can be formed into thin sheets and shaped to make gutters and pipes. Aluminium is less expensive than cast iron but costs more than PVC pipes.

PVC pipes are light and easily formed into gutters or pipes. It does not corrode but requires additives to protect it from ultraviolet rays in sunlight.
