Wood and PVC are both popular choices for window frames. They each have good properties and are both durable.

The table shows a comparison of the two materials.

Window frames in old buildings were often
made of stone.

PVC Wood

Relatively new material.

Low maintenance.

Good thermal insulation.

Unaffected by moisture.

Lightweight.

Easy to manufacture frames.

Low mechanical strength so requires additional strengthening during manufacture.

Traditional material.

Requires regular painting.

Good thermal and sound insulation.

Biodegradable so can rot if not maintained properly.

Colour can be changed by painting.

Can expand and contract depending on the weather. This can cause sticking windows.
